Today We Brand 4 You Look at the Business benefits of Promotional Pens

Today’s businesses find themselves with an increasingly fragmented choice of marketing options including printed media like newspapers and magazines, radio, TV, social media, SEO and many more traditional and digital options. The key is to invest in the most cost-effective options and to select the right platforms for your message.

Building brand awareness and reaching the right audience with your message is often a quandary for many businesses. Where do you spend your marketing budget and how much do you spend? How often do you advertise and where? Like John Wannamaker once said; “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, the trouble is I don’t know which half.”

Promotional merchandise is a popular choice with marketers and has many benefits. There are many options to choose from when it comes to branded goods including clothing, promotional mugs, USB sticks, umbrellas and the good old favourite, promotional pens and writing instruments now let’s take a look at why this long-standing staple is such a good investment for businesses.

 Promotional Pens

Why choose  Promotional pens ?

Promotional pens are always a valuable item to give away and are something that is largely kept. In a recent BPMA (British Promotional Merchandise Association) survey, 124 people out of 1,000 said that they had promotional pens. This is more than double the amount of people who had the next popular product, the mug.

The pen is that one item that people always have a use for. Even the most die-hard technology fans with their iPhones, iPads and other smart accessories like to have a pen to hand for signing documents, scribbling notes and filling in various administrative forms. Even if it’s not an ink pen, a stylus pen often comes in handy.

A pen is kept somewhere close to hand. That might be on the desk, in a pocket or a handbag or in the kitchen drawer. It is a great way therefore, for companies to brand themselves with a subtle and constant reminder to existing or potential customers about their products or services. Everyone loves getting freebies and more importantly a freebie that they can use.

Impress new or potential customers

If you want to make an impression with a customer, or someone you are hoping will become a customer, then something that they are likely to use is a good place to start. What makes a free gift special though is the quality of that item. You can tell a lot about a company by the quality of the free merchandise.

Quality is an important factor

The better the quality of your promotional pens the longer your brand is present. If the promotional pens that you choose are a cheap offering, that you purchased on a tight budget, then it’s not going to be around long enough to pay dividends. Better to spend more on a quality product that will advertise your products and services for a long time.

Consider the finer detail

It’s not just enough to say you are going to give away promotional pens, you also need to consider the following:

  • Which type of pen should you choose – ball point, marker, stylus pen, pencil, a gift set or something else?
  • The ink colour – Some administrative forms are required to be filled in using a certain colour, if you are filling in an official form like a passport, for example, you are usually required to use a black pen.
  • The style of the pen – Will it have a clip on the top to hook over a pocket and what other features will you include?

If you are going to invest in a piece of branded merchandise to give to your customers, it is worth spending a little time thinking about the details which shouldn’t be overlooked.

What information do you include on your promotional pens?

The name, a company logo and a method of finding you is usually good. A telephone number, a website address or simply ‘find us on Facebook’ are all viable options. Also, there is a lot to be said for the colour of the pen.

Many people opt for their company colours but research shows that there are a number of reasons to carefully select a colour. Yellow is a colour associated with happiness, blue is a calming colour and green represents fresh ideas but it has to be the right shade.

You may be thinking that a pen is just a pen but there is a lot to be said for giving consideration to these factors. Of course, if you feel this is a bit too in depth, you can just associate it with your logo colours.

How many promotional pens do you order?

This can be another tricky question to answer. How many pens do you need? If you are just starting out in business, how do you know how many customers you will see? Let’s imagine you are a tradesman and you give a pen to every customer you complete a job for.

If you see 3 or 4 customers in a day then you will soon use a number of pens however if you undertake projects that take weeks then you will not need so many.

If you are going to give them out at events, the chances are you are going to need a lot. Don’t worry about ordering too many unless you are planning to make logo or branding changes in the near future. Often, the more you order, the lower the cost per unit so the more you can order, the cheaper it will be in the long run.

While much of marketing and advertising can be seen as a risk, the good old promotional pen will serve you and your business well. As a constant reminder of your brand, it is a great way to not only reward customers, or incentivise potential customers, but also to keep reminding people of your business and build your brand awareness.
